In our quest to reveal the secrets of Dusita Paris's latest creation, we had the pleasure of speaking with the creator, Pissara Umavijani. Throughout our conversation, she opened the doors to the world of Pelagos, passionately sharing the challenges faced, the inspirations that drove her, and the emotions she aimed to capture through this fragrance.

What were your main sources of inspiration for the creation of Pelagos?

Pelagos, Extrait de Parfum

The main idea behind Pelagos ("sea" in Greek) was born from my vacation memories in the islands of the Aegean Sea in Greece. After many hours spent on an idyllic beach, swimming and relaxing, I watched the sky and the sea merge at the horizon at sunset. I stayed there, mesmerized, filled with the magical feeling that anything was possible.

I wanted to capture this moment in a contemporary, natural, fresh, and luminous olfactory composition. This precious memory reflects a sentiment that my father, Montri Umavijani, expressed in one of his poems (which also served as an inspiration for Pelagos):

"Tell me where my limit lies,

so I may go up to it

and knock it just so gently

to show I am human."

Inspiration

Can you tell us about the key ingredients and olfactory notes that make up the Pelagos fragrance, as well as their importance in the overall composition?

A set of citrus notes (bergamot, orange, litsea cubeba) defines the top notes, giving the fragrance the brightness and freshness I wanted for its opening. My marine breeze accord, composed of various natural ingredients, is a central pillar of the composition, intended to convey the invigorating energy of the Aegean Sea, as well as a nod to the air and nature that complete the landscape. Another key ingredient is iris butter, which helps to blend the floral, vegetal, and coumarinic notes (jasmine, white thyme, tonka bean), while enhancing the emotional impact of the fragrance. Regarding the base, what reinforces the dynamic character of Pelagos is my soft leather accord and a symphony of woody and earthy elements (mainly sandalwood, but also amyris, patchouli, and vetiver). Finally, the ethereal touches of ambrette and incense help to keep the base airy, in line with the theme, idea, and emotion I wanted to express.

Can you choose 3 words to describe Pelagos?

I would say: invigorating, joyful, and dynamic.

What particular challenges did you encounter during the development of this fragrance, and how did you overcome them?

The main challenge was to compose an original, extraordinary aquatic accord with a natural scent (excluding the overly used synthetic ozonic ingredients). My marine breeze accord, created especially for Pelagos, includes many natural ingredients such as pine, cypress, clary sage, and oakmoss. Another challenge was to create a vibrant fresh and marine aura with a certain degree of abstraction, a sense of mystery. I believe that the inclusion of a beautiful iris butter helped me achieve the desired result. I hope that fragrance enthusiasts will welcome Pelagos as warmly as they have welcomed all my previous creations!
